  1. What kind of Alcohol is used to make tinctures?

  2. Could you please give directions on how to make a tincture using dandelions? Thanks!

  3. Hi Sandy and Bev. Sorry, I don’t get here very often anymore, Wild Stories is mostly active on Facebook ( ) or on the original blog

To make a tincture you need the highest alcohol content spirit you can find unflavoured. Overseas you can buy 95% ethilic alcohol from the supermarket, here in Australia you can only find 50% vodka. THis is why some people distill their own spirit for their tinctures, as it is too expensive and not very good quality. Anyway, if you use the 50% vodka it will last less but would still work. Just make smaller batches and restock every two years.
If using fresh material wash and dry fully before using, try to minimize the moisture in the tincture.
Fill a jar with plant material, chop it and squish it in. Fill with spirit making sure there is no air bubble. Keep in a dark place for 2-6 weeks (there more you keep it the more properties gets infused in the liquid). Strain it and that’s it.
Home-made tinctures are variable on properties. To have more reliable tinctures you need to use good quality plants.
